The King Leaf and His Rocks

Daniel Coston February 6, 2026

This work began with a single autumn leaf resting in the shallows amidst a group of stones. The scale, color, and unapologetic shape gave it a kind of authority. The creek bed receded into blues and mineral grays, but the leaf remained luminous, almost declarative.

What interested me was not only the contrast of warm and cool, but the way the leaf appears suspended.
