Refraction

Daniel Coston February 6, 2026

Refraction portrays what you see when you look into the water to find another world—where light is bent and twisted here and there. Painted by looking directly into shallow water, the composition is built from overlapping stones whose edges soften and shift under the surface.

Warm ochres and muted blues are interrupted by thin, shimmers of the restless movement of water and light. This work emerged from sustained looking. Rather than depicting a single moment, Refraction holds many moments at once: light passing, water moving, stone remaining.

At its core, Refraction is about attentiveness to what becomes visible when we slow down. It offers a steady, meditative presence that continues to reveal itself over time.

I was really looking forward to sharing “My Creeks” in person this Friday, but it looks like the winter weather has other plans ❄️ The after-hours reception at @cantrellgallery (scheduled for Jan 23) has been canceled.

Hi! I’m excited to show a new series of paintings at @cantrellgallery starting later this month. The paintings in “My Creeks” reflect a fondness for creeks that has been with me since I was old enough to explore on my own. I’v
“The Resting Spot” shows a scene that is getting harder to find as new neighborhoods and busy roads surround the little rural farms. That makes the scene even more interesting to me—a small snapshot in time of a world that shaped me
